Time

Once upon a merry time
They walked through flowering fields
There was time to sniff the roses
What was planted was what yield

They sang and laughed and danced together
And thought it would last forever
One lone man said "Time is here!"
But it was a vain endeavor

Then there came a sunny time
And the shadows were chased away
The delicate flowers withered
And the sheep began to stray

But they revelled in the warmth of day
Though the man continued to say,
"Time is moving, change is here!"
But the people did not hear

Then there came a colder time
And once green leaves were falling
Soon the kindred sprites were hiding
While rowdy kids went romping

They simply enjoyed the soothing air
As the lone man gathered wood
It could get colder or it could get warmer
Time was fickle, but foresight was good

Then there came a freezing time
When breaths froze in their throats
They put on all that was in their closets
And pulled on all their coats

They burnt their chairs and burnt their books
But still they starved in the cold
The lone man sighed and laughed and cried
Once upon a time of old
